Rotterdam Top Attractions

The city of Rotterdam is located in South Holland, the Netherlands and is the home of great architecture, great museums, and very interesting history and of course great sports and shopping! People come from all around to visit the second largest sports stadium in the country and to stroll down the leisurely streets shopping for various treasures while looking at the beaches that were created along the river.

Great Sports Teams

Football (or soccer as it is know in the United States) is a very popular sport in Europe and the Netherlands is no exception. Rotterdam is the home of 3 different football organizations and the teams are world champions in the country's favorite sport. Stadion Feyenoord was built in 1931 and is the second largest football stadium in the Netherlands. The stadium seats 51,480 people and is usually filled to capacity as most of the city comes out to watch its world champion football team with an energy that could rival the super bowl.

Another sport Rotterdam is proud of it its marathon's. Some of the fastest marathon courses in the world are found in the city by the river. In 2010 the Grande Depart Tour De France which is the most well know International marathon was chosen to be hosted by the city because of its location which would be used as a showcase for the different events of the well know marathon. Hosting the Tour de France was an accomplishment for Rotterdam but it was not the first time the race had been run in the Netherlands.

Shopping in the City

The city streets of Rotterdam are best known for their shopping because of the famous pedestrian only streets that so many shops are sitting on. These famous streets were opened in 1953 and were another first for the city because they were the only pedestrian only street in the entire country of the Netherlands. Great shopping venues have popped up along these streets including a premium shopping center called the Alexandrium which is settled along east of the city.

In order to get to these premium shopping centers a massive transportation system has been set up to include Railways systems that include 7 train stations and 4 train lines, 6 motorways that give access to all areas of the city, a light rail to zip around the city and a subway city system that runs all along the under girth of the city. A tram and bus lines also contribute to modes of transportation around the city and all of these lead right into the heart of Rotterdam shopping venues.

So as you can see Rotterdam has a lot to offer from great sports teams and venues to great shopping and modes of transportation to get you to that shopping. This is a historical place that when visited, will leave you with a sense of wonder and amazement at what goes on in this major port of Europe. The city has been knocked down and rebuilt and continues to thrive and grow and be a center point for many wonderful things.
